2026 MLB Postseason Preview: Who's Going to October?

Updated September 19, 2026

Four teams have clinched: Brewers (NL Central, 92-56, Sept 11), Rays (AL East, Sept 12), Yankees (61st postseason berth, Sept 14), Dodgers (NL West, 93-60, Sept 17). Nine spots remain with the regular season ending September 27. Here's the full 2026 playoff picture.

The MLB postseason expands to twelve teams — six per league — with three division winners and three wild card teams in each league. The top two seeds in each league get first-round byes; the other four play a best-of-three Wild Card Series before the League Division Series begin.

As September 2026 opens, the playoff picture is mostly clear. Most division races are settled in terms of direction, if not mathematically. The wild card races remain genuinely contested. And somewhere in this field, a team is about to do something a future scorecard will capture forever.

National League

NL Central: Milwaukee Brewers — CLINCHED

The Brewers clinched their 2026 postseason berth on September 11 — first team in baseball — by beating the Reds 20-0 at American Family Field. At 92-56, they are the best team in baseball and the clear NL favorite. Their record includes the modern-era MLB shutout record: a 22-0 dismantling of the Mariners on August 19. Jacob Misiorowski leads a dominant pitching staff. The division title (their first since 2011) is within reach. Full clinch story →

NL East: Atlanta Braves

The Braves have led the NL East most of the season, with a rotation that has stayed mostly healthy and an offense powered by Ronald Acuña Jr. and Ozzie Albies. Atlanta acquired Luis Arraez at the trade deadline to shore up their lineup. Their championship pedigree — and the 1995 WS Game 6 scorecard — gives their fan base patience built on proof.

NL West: Los Angeles Dodgers — CLINCHED

The Dodgers clinched their fifth consecutive NL West title on September 17 — 8-2 over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park. Kyle Tucker went 4-for-5 (HR, 2B, 2B, 1B) — a triple short of the cycle in the clinching game — and the three-time defending champions locked up home-field advantage. At 93-60, Los Angeles is the best team in the NL alongside the Brewers. Full clinch story →

NL Wild Card Picture

The Cubs (around 74-54 as of late August) are the most likely NL wild card entrant — surging in August after acquiring Clay Holmes. The Phillies (Luis Arraez dealt, but a deep lineup) and the Mets remain within reach. The NL wild card race is competitive and likely to go deep into September.

American League

AL East: Tampa Bay Rays

The Rays have been among baseball's best teams all year, leading the AL East at 76-51 through mid-August. Tampa Bay's model — pitching depth, defensive versatility, on-base percentage — has produced another October-caliber club. The Miracle at the Trop (Game 162, 2011) is the Rays' defining postseason-adjacent moment. This team is built to go deep in October.

AL Central: Chicago White Sox

The White Sox have led the AL Central most of the summer, with the Guardians and Twins within striking distance. Chicago's 2005 World Series sweep — the one that ended 88 years of waiting — is the franchise's last championship. A return to October in 2026 would be the organization's most meaningful postseason since.

AL West: Houston Astros

The Astros moved to the AL West lead by mid-August after trailing earlier in the summer. Houston's dynasty — four American League pennants since 2017, two World Series titles — gives them a postseason pedigree matched by almost no one. The 2022 World Series Game 6 clincher is in the catalog.

AL Wild Card Picture

The New York Yankees clinched their 61st postseason berth on September 14 — the most in MLB history. Aaron Judge's first home run since May 24, a three-run shot off A.J. Minter in the eighth inning of an 8-3 win over the Twins, sealed it. Judge missed three-plus months with a rib stress fracture. The comeback arc couldn't have been scripted better. NL Wild Card Series (Best-of-3) #3 Los Angeles Dodgers vs #6 seed · #4 Chicago Cubs vs #5 seed

The Storylines to Watch

Yordan Alvarez's Triple Crown Bid — Now in Jeopardy

Alvarez led all three AL categories entering September, but the bid has slipped: Willy Caminero (Rays) leads home runs 39-38 and Pete Alonso (Orioles) leads RBI 97-95. Alvarez still leads batting average at .311. With two weeks left, he needs to retake both power categories. The full Alvarez Triple Crown story →

Aaron Judge's Return

Judge has been sidelined since May with a rib stress fracture, sitting at 385 career home runs — 15 from 400. Aaron Boone confirmed a September 8 return is "in play." His return to the lineup in a Wild Card race would be one of the most anticipated moments of the baseball year. Every home run he hits will be watched differently. The Dodgers Are In — And Dangerous

After a puzzling 1-7 August, the Dodgers have found September. They clinched their fifth straight NL West title on September 17 — Kyle Tucker's near-cycle night in Cincinnati sealed it. Ohtani, Freeman, and now Skubal make this the deepest roster in baseball. The 2025 World Series Game 7 scorecard, the Dodgers' most recent championship night, is in the catalog. Clinch story →

The Brewers' First Pennant?

Milwaukee has never been to the World Series with the current franchise (they moved from the AL in 1998). Their 2011 run — Nyjer Morgan's walk-off in the NLDS Game 5, the first postseason series win in franchise history — is the closest they've come. This team is better than that one. The question is whether they can close it out when October arrives.
